Overcoming Obstacles One At A Time

So far we have been upbeat as we continue to make strides in our efforts to help the children at the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School in Uganda, Africa. However, this time there have been glitches … we are still making progress but we have had some setbacks.

November Update

Just to bring you all up to date on what has happened in the last couple of weeks.

Samaritan's Feet has 1,000 pairs of shoes ... mostly adult. I have told them to hold onto them until we can do the CHILDREN. I sent the complete list, with sizes, but that didn't seem to "get through". Joe sent me a website ... Shoes4Africa ... who would be willing to check that our for me?

1,000 Red Cross blankets are being delivered Monday am. I then have to get them shipped; one step at a time!

I have sent the money for the Christmas party which Geoffrey is also making a fifth anniversary celebration so parents and guardians alike - as well as the children - will be there. Six of us will be going, with two of the people nurses which means we will be able to take lots of supplies and have the ladies check out the children that we have been worrying about.

We will not be able to take the Sylvia's Children/Red Cross t-shirts as originally planned. The Red Cross has been trying to get people to sponsor but it has been rough going because of the economy. We decided that we would take more time, do it right, and take them in the summer.

For Christmas, then, I will do as last year and purchase fun little gifts from Oriental Trading which we will take with us. Michele -- maybe you can help me with this.

And, speaking of summer, I will know end of December if we are having television coverage. I have Jeroen Moernik, who does dance training for children, coming. He will be preparing a special program combining African and American dance which will be highly photographable. And, in order to make that work, we will have to spend five days at the school.

So we will leave on Friday, June 26, work at the school through July 3, and then go to Murchisson Falls for Saturday, Sunday, coming back Monday afternoon and leaving either Monday night or Tuesday, depending upon flights. We are still trying to keep it to $3,500. Could I have a tentative count of "formers" who will be coming on this trip? Currently I have Jeroen, Tony, Michele, Kristen Thomas (from Seattle, WA), Doug and me as definites.

I believe Claire is also coming, as well as Eileen, Joe and Vicky but I just need a confirmation. We can only take 16 so I always want to give "right of first refusal" to the ones who have been involved since we started going over. I have five others that have said they want to go but I won't contact them until I hear from all of you.

Lastly, I have a dilemma and need your input. Geoffrey can buy 4 acres of land for approximately $4,500 which would be great for the vegetable garden which would provide for the school as well as having products for sale. We don't have the money; I would have to dip into the sponsorships dollars and I don't feel comfortable doing that. Do you have anyone in mind who would like to donate that money? Really need input and help on this.

Thanks to all of you for you on-going support and love of the children. This is going to be a tough year.
