Sylvia’s Children on the Move!

October and November are busy months for Sylvia’s Children! Lots and lots happening. And, how wonderful because it all goes toward helping the children at the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary and Day Care School in Uganda, Africa. Here goes!

September 15-November 1

For the second time Starbucks is holding a clothing drive at 12 of their stores to help Sylvia’s Children. The stores are located in Middletown, Matawan, Manalapan, Marlboro, Edison, Union, Westfield, East Brunswick, New Brunswick, Shrewsbury, Freehold (Route 9/33) and Piscataway. You can donate old clothes, shoes, belts, purses, toys … the works. The last collection time we received 16,000 pounds (that’s eight tons!) which generated over $3,000 for our health clinic. Starbucks also wants to do this on a regular basis as part of their corporate social responsibility philosophy.

The clothing is stored in a pod which has been donated by Central PODS of New Jersey, the printing the boxes was done by AlphaGraphics in Red Bank, and the boxes donated by Red McJunkin Man.

The Starbucks stores in Marilyn Hatcher’s district played in a baseball tournament with other stores and called themselves Ugandan Hope. (See attached pictures). Through there participation Sylvia’s Children will receive a donation equal to the time spent at the event. I LOVE my Starbucks folks! (And, my Starbucks iced tea!)

September 30-October 6

Sylvia will be going to Uganda to visit the school and do some work in preparation for the Christmas trip in November. Every year Sylvia’s Children puts on a Christmas party for the children and provides them with gifts. Thanks to everyone’s generosity this year every boy will get a new shirt and every girl a new dress. Plus, lots of fun stuff … stickers, sunglasses, candy, thumb puppets, bracelets for the girls, pencils, crayons … things they would never get without our being there. And, we have a party with a cake, beans and rice with meat, and soda. We get to serve them … it is a humbling experience.

October 10

Sylvia will be making a presentation at Grace Lutheran Church in Freehold, New Jersey. The presentation will be at both services and for the Sunday School. Grace Lutheran Church sponsors a child at the school and will be able to see pictures of who they sponsor as well as understanding how important their sponsorship is to a child who is an orphan.

October 13

Sylvia will be making a presentation to the STEP group at Manalapan High School at 7:30 in the morning! The STEP group will be sponsoring a child and want to understand, as the folks at Grace Lutheran Church do, what the school is like and how they are helping to make a difference in a child’s life. They will learn that they are the conduit to a child getting out of poverty through education.

October 16-17

Sylvia’s Children will be exhibiting at the Adventure in Travel Trade Show at the Meadowlands on October 16-17. Free tickets are available by calling 732 946 2711 and talking to Susan or visit http://www.adventureexpo.com/consumer and enter promo code: child. It’s a great opportunity to see all the different travel opportunities in the world and, of course, to find out about traveling to Uganda with Sylvia’s Children.

October 28

On Thursday, October 28, Sylvia will be speaking to the Spring Lake Rotary about Sylvia’s Children, thanks to the efforts of Nancy Hazelgrove. The Rotary has a strong International presence and looks for programs, like Sylvia’s Children, to help make a difference in the African community.

October 30

Saturday, October 30, come to Atlantic City and enjoy a concert by Thula Sizwe, a Zulu performing group that is helping Sylvia’s Children raise money for the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary and Day Care School in Uganda. The concert will be from 7:30-9:30 pm at the Sheraton in Atlantic City. And, good news! Want to stay over? The Sheraton is offering a $149 per double occupancy hotel stay that INCLUDES your tickets to the performance! Come, enjoy exuberant, wonderful singing and dancing and then party the night way in Atlantic City. Visit http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/sylviachildren for reservations and information.

October 31

Thula Sizwe will be participating in the 10 a.m. morning service at Holmdel Community United Church of Christ at 40 West Main Street (all are welcome). This will be followed by a pot luck lunch (again, please come and join in the fellowships and fun.). Then there will be a 2 pm concert featuring Thula Sizwe. A free will offering will be taken. This is a joint concert between Thula Sizwe and Sylvia’s Children.

Post Halloween candy drive

The first and second grades at Village School will be collecting left over Halloween candy for the children at the school. Last year they donated over 300 pounds and the children at the Ugandan school were able to have holiday treats!

November 7

Jeff Tuccillo, Katonah, New York is running in the New York City Marathon for Sylvia’s Children. Jeff donated money several years ago so the library could be named for his wife … we now have the Vicky Tuccillo Library and he continues to raise funds for Sylvia’s Children. He has run over 1,000 miles to become qualified to run this year and wants to raise $14,000 so we can buy 40 sewing machines and construct a building to house them so the children can learn a trade. In addition the widows could come in at 4 pm and learn to sew uniforms which would provide income to the school, income for the widows and have a positive economic impact on the community.

November 14

The first annual Ranney 5 mile walk for Sylvia’s Children. Michelle Drappi, a senior at Ranny School, has organized this event. The hours will be 11 to 4 on Sunday November 14. Stay tuned for more information.

November 18-25

Lastly, Michele Costa, Celia Doty and Sylvia Allen will be going to Uganda on these dates to put on a Christmas party for the children. There is nothing more heartwarming that helping these children and watching their eyes light up over the excitement of Christmas presents and a party. You should join us some year!
