Lots of News and Stuff!

First, Michele is now handling the Twitter account. Follow by going to Twitter and typing in "sylviaschildren" and follow her updates on the school and the country.

Second, go to our blog http://sylviaschildren.blogspot.com for regular updates. Go down the right hand side and click on all our updates, see pictures and enjoy our progress.

Need Your Help
We leave on Thursday, March 17 for the medical trip. When we were there last I saw that the kitchen knives were in terrible shape. If you are cleaning out your utensil drawers and have extra knives, send them our way. I am sure they are in better shape than those at the school.

Also, we did all the packing on Sunday and discovered we need 1,000 small tubes of toothpaste. If you can donate them, great! If not, find out if we can get them wholesale.

Lastly, not for this trip but for our Christmas trip, start collecting unused jewelry. We do a Christmas party every year and have jewelry for the staff. The men can pick gifts for their wives/girlfriends and the ladies can select what they would like to wear. It is so much fun to watch them enjoy themselves.

Upcoming Fundraising Activities
On Wednesday, March 2, Monmouth Univerisity is producing the Vagina Monologues and Sylvia's Children will benefit from this event. The show is 7:30pm and will be held in the Rebecca Stafford Student Center on the second floor in the Anacon Room. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door and are available at the info booth of the Student Center. Please come, enjoy the show and help Sylvia's Children.

Then, on Saturday, April 9, the Millstone Theatre will be presenting JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and, once again, Sylvia's Children will benefit. Stay tuned for address, prices and time. Thank you Laurie Edwards for offering to do this. (I have seen plays produced by her... they are Broadway quality... plan on attending!)

Meet Derek and Michelle
As mentioned in the last newsletter, Derek and Michelle are the beginnings of our chicken farm! They were gifts from Molly and Derek's family to thank us for making Molly's ears and Derek's arm well. We have one more that Michele (my daughter, not the chicken) named Claire and we will post a picture when we get back from Africa end of March. We are very excited because several people have already donated money for chickens and the Joseph J. Catena School in Freehold (our sister school) is raising money for the rest of the flock!

Another Successful Clothing Drive
Thanks to Starbucks (my favorite!) we have had another successful clothing drive which generated 10,000 lbs. (5 tons!) and translates into $1,500! Since the beginning of this program last spring we have collected 21 tons of donations and raised over $6,500. If you have a local Starbucks and would like to approach them about helping us just give me a call and I will outline the whole program!

Awards
I just got word that the Association of Fundraising Professionals is giving me the Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year award. This was possible only through the efforts of all of YOU! Thanks for your help.

And the local Holmdel Journal notified me that I was one of three finalists in their community excellence awards for Business Person of the year (in with Vonage and Dearborn Farms). Good company but I don't think I will be the choice! Again, thanks to all of you for your support.

Lastly
Flat Stanley just returned from a trip to Ireland with me and will be joining us in Africa. Susan Muhler's son, Liam, sent him with me. Had a wonderful time writing the story (Susan is my Choir Director).

I have been elected to the Board of Directors for APTA, the Association for the Promotion of Tourism in Africa. It just seems like the right place to be as we not only make a difference in the village of Mbiriizi but Uganda and, hopefully, Africa. IT's a wonderful country and the people are lovely ... they need our help.

Please share this newsletter with your friends, have them visit the blog (http://sylviaschildren.blogspot.com), follow on Twitter (sylviaschildren) and check our Facebook page (Sylvia's Children).

The Start of our Chicken Farm!

Meet Derek (the beautiful rooster) and Michele (the fat white one) who are the beginnings of our chicken farm. Both of these were gifts to us at Christmas time as a thank you from the parents and/or guardians of two children.

Derek, who is from Derek's guardian (that was the one young man's name), was named after the young man who had a broken arm and we got him to the hospital and had it fixed. Michele (the hen) was a gift from Molly's mother. Molly has had Otitis Media for 6 years and it was never cured. We finally found a doctor who cured it! Incidentally, Ronnie named the hen Michele because she was a "fat white chick").

Just found out today we have another chicken donated ... I am waiting for my daughter Michele to name it!
